Protect yourself from the sun

Moderate and controlled sun exposure is beneficial for the synthesis of vitamin D. However, excessive exposure can cause skin problems. That is why, in the months of more sun exposure, it is important to protect ourselves.

Factors to take into account when choosing a sun protection garment

1.- The type of tissue. Nylon, silk, and polyester protect better than cotton, viscose, rayon, and linen.

2.- The thickness of the clothes. The tighter, heavier and thicker the fabric, the more protection it provides.

3.- The color of the clothes. Dark colors offer up to 5 times greater sun protection than light colors. That is why white is the color that least protects.

4.- UPF protection, the UPF level indicates the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the garment, which is why the higher the UPF, the greater the sun protection that garment will provide us.

One point to keep in mind is that if the garment is wet, the protection of the garment is reduced by half, since the fabric becomes transparent and the sun's rays enter easily. That is why if a cotton T-shirt has a UPF protection normally of 40, when wet it is reduced to 20.

The advantage of garments designed to be used in water is that they dry easily, but we must not forget the rule that any wet garment reduces its UPF by half.
